BINTULU, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on Malaysians to reflect on the values of unity, respect and mutual understanding that have shaped the nation since its formation in 1963.
Delivering his Malaysia Day 62 message through Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the Thanksgiving Ceremony of Other Religions in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration here last night, Abang Johari said the celebration is a historic occasion that reminds the people of the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers.
“This year’s celebration carries the national theme ‘Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka’ and the Sarawak theme’ Sarawak Maju Makmur Dalam Malaysia’. It reflects the spirit of togetherness of our diverse communities in building a shared future,” he said.
He stressed that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remains the cornerstone of the Federation, adding that since 2022, it has been formally recognised under Article 160(2) of the Federal Constitution.
“So far, 13 out of 29 demands put forward by Sarawak and Sabah have been resolved, including recognition of the Sarawak Public Works Department, Irrigation Department, and the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) as technical departments. Other outcomes include Sarawak’s representation in the Inland Revenue Board, regulatory control over gas, and the return of Bintulu Port,” he added.
Abang Johari also noted the state’s progress in education and healthcare, with greater autonomy in curriculum development, dual-language teaching, and commitments to increased federal healthcare funding.
“These outcomes matter to our people and reflect true partnership and federalism, with the cooperation and commitment of the Federal Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said.
On Sarawak’s economic transformation, the Premier highlighted the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, which focuses on green economy, renewable energy, digital technology, and high-value industries.
“We are not merely reacting to change, we are positioning Sarawak ahead of the curve. Our economic strategies are designed to ensure prosperity and opportunities for all Sarawakians, regardless of where they live,” he said.
Abang Johari also commended the uniqueness of Sarawak in hosting the annual Thanksgiving Ceremony of Other Religions, reflecting the state’s culture of inclusiveness, tolerance and respect among its multi-religious society.
“The spirit of unity symbolised by our slogan Segulai Sejalai must be preserved. We must reject extremism and fanaticism that could disrupt peace and harmony,” he said, adding that every citizen is equal under the Federal Constitution.
