SARAWAKIANS URGED TO KEEP THE SPIRIT OF PATRIOTISM ALIVE

31/08/2025 02:30 PM

SARIKEI, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- The people of Sarawak are urged to continue strengthening their identity, cherishing the spirit of independence, and safeguarding unity as the foundation of Malaysia’s strength.

State Minister of Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, who is the minister responsible for the state-level 2025 National Day celebration, said that patriotism is not merely about commemorating historical dates, but also about translating that spirit into a collective determination to develop both the state and the nation.

"The theme of this year's National Day, Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni, calls on us to cultivate a spirit free from hatred and division.

“A truly independent soul values peace, unity, and is willing to sacrifice for the common good,” she said in her welcoming speech at the state-level National Day celebration at the Sarikei Civic Hall today.

The event, graced by Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, was also attended by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and members of the state cabinet.

Fatimah highlighted that Sarawak’s unique identity lies in its 101 community groups, comprising 27 major ethnic groups and 74 minor ones, all living in harmony, making the state a model of unity in diversity.

She stressed the importance of three significant dates, namely July 22 for Sarawak Day,  Aug 31 (National Day), and Sept 16 (Malaysia Day), as milestones that should continue to inspire the young generation to honour the struggles for independence and the formation of Malaysia.

“Unity is the bulwark of independence. Without it, the freedom we enjoy today could be at risk. The young generation must continue to serve as the backbone of peace and harmony in the country,” she emphasised.

This year’s celebration featured an array of events, including the Ambang Merdeka Concert attended by 5,000 spectators last night and the Unity Walk this morning, which saw the participation of 8,000 people.

The official ceremony also showcased vibrant performances, including music by Sarikei Busker, angklung renditions by Kumpulan Angklung Madrasah, cultural dances, choral speaking by students of SMK St Anthony Sarikei, and stage plays promoting noble values performed by local youth.

According to Fatimah, throughout the 2025 National Month, the Sarawak Malaysian Information Department (JaPen) organised a series of activities, such as the MADANI Kita Karnival, the Jalur Gemilang Merdeka Travel, the Nationality Exhibition, and Jiwa@Komuniti MADANI across the state.

She also said that under the leadership of the Sarawak Premier and the GPS Government, the Post-COVID-19 Development Plan (PCDS) 2030 continues to focus on economic prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability, ensuring Sarawak’s continued progress.

“Let us pray that Sarawak remains blessed with a united people and wise leaders who safeguard the state’s peace and prosperity,” she said.

The ceremony concluded with a spirited “Merdeka” chant and the symbolic raising of the Jalur Gemilang.

“Let us all pray that Sarawak continues to be blessed with a united people, as well as wise leaders who safeguard the peace and prosperity of the state,” he said. The celebration ceremony was then closed with a mass Merdeka chant and the flying of the Jalur Gemilang
