RUGBY: PDRM TARGET HISTORIC AGONG'S CUP THREE-PEAT

26/08/2025 06:52 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Defending champions Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are targeting a third straight Agong’s Cup title as they look to cement their dominance in domestic rugby.

Team manager SAC Nasri Mansor said the squad’s ambition was clear, as the police side, who lifted the prestigious trophy in 2023 and 2024, head into this year’s edition with confidence under a settled coaching and management set-up.

“PDRM won the Agong’s Cup in 2023 and 2024, two years in a row, so from the management, coaching and players’ side, we truly hope and are determined to win the Agong’s Cup for the third consecutive time.

“God willing, with support from the PDRM leadership, PDRM sports partners, as well as the management and coaching staff, this hope can be realised,” he told reporters when met after the PDRM Rugby Team Hi-Tea at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here, today.

He said PDRM currently have around 80 players, including new imports in training with the squad set to be trimmed down to 40 in line with Malaysian Rugby (MR) requirements, while several friendly matches had also been arranged to prepare the team.

Nasri added that the team, coached by former national professional K. Dinesvaran, better known as Dugro, would also be competing in the Rujirawongse Cup in Chiang Mai, Thailand, early next month, as they look to defend the title won in Melaka last year.

However, he said that the tournament in Thailand would not involve any import players.

The 2025 Agong’s Cup, scheduled from Sept 6 to Oct 25, will see PDRM drawn in Group A alongside Kedah, Perlis, Selangor and Kelantan.

Group B features Johor, Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Terengganu and Pahang.

In the previous edition, PDRM were crowned champions after defeating Johor 43-29 in the final, thus securing their fifth title after triumphs in 1983, 1985, 1991 and 2023.
