KUCHING, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The Kuching City Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) project under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will cost about RM2 billion, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He said the tender for the project, to be implemented in three main work packages, namely the construction of a canal, a bridge, and a barrage along Sungai Salak here, would open this year, with the construction work expected to begin next year.

“This RTB will discharge excess water through Sungai Salak. Just like in Sungai Sarawak, there is also a barrage. So in Sungai Salak, there will be a barrage so that seawater will not enter and we will be able to control it.

“When high tides occur, we can close the barrage,” Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, told reporters after the opening ceremony of the He Medical Clinic here today

The Kuching RTB is one of several infrastructure and public facility projects under the 13MP (2026–2030), aimed at enhancing flood resilience and improving road access for public convenience.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat on July 31, announced that RM20 billion has been allocated for the implementation of 103 RTB projects across the country to reduce disaster risks and impacts.

Among the RTB projects identified for implementation are at Sungai Langat and Sungai Buloh in Selangor, Sungai Golok in Kelantan, Sungai Gemencheh in Negeri Sembilan, Sungai Baru in Melaka, Sungai Johor Basin and Sungai Muar Basin in Johor, Sungai Pahang Basin in Pahang, and Kuching City in Sarawak
