WATERY SCARE FOR FOUR HURT AS CAR PLUNGES INTO CANAL IN PENANG

GEORGE TOWN, July 6 (Bernama) -- Four people escaped a grave situation with serious injuries when their Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle (MPV) went off the road before crashing into a shallow canal along Jalan York here today.

An elderly man and three women involved in the accident were identified as Mohd Barak Abdul Latiff, 64, who sustained minor injuries while three others including two sisters, Rashidah Bee Shaik Mydin, 54, Fatimah Beevi P.M. Mydin, 59, as well as Mydin Fatimah P.M. Mydin, 63, suffered serious injuries.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant operations director John Sagun Francis said his department received an emergency call at 3.24 pm before a team from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was dispatched to the location.

“The firefighters arrived at the site to find all the victims trapped in their car in the canal after it was believed to have skidded off the road before plunging in.

“The fire department immediately carried out a rescue operation using special firefighting equipment. All the victims were swiftly extricated by 4 pm," he said in a statement today.

He added that the victims were given initial treatment by a medical team before being sent for further treatment by an ambulance and a JBPM EMRS (Emergency Medical Rescue Services) vehicle to the Penang Hospital.
