KANANASKIS (Canada), June 18 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump on Tuesday said there remains a possibility for a trade agreement with Japan, following talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route back to the US, Trump described his discussion with Ishiba as a “great conversation”, although no agreement was reached on Washington’s tariff measures, Kyodo news agency reported.
“The Japanese are tough,” Trump said, while noting that, “ultimately, you have to understand we're just going to send a letter saying, ‘This is what you're going to pay, otherwise you don't have to do business with us.’ But there's a chance.”
The Trump-Ishiba meeting on Monday came after a series of ministerial-level negotiations, with Japan, a key US ally -- seeking flexibility on the United States’ hardline trade and tariff policies.
