WASHINGTON, June 5 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a new travel ban on citizens from 12 countries, citing national security risks,
The directive was issued through a presidential proclamation and a video statement, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
It will take effect at 12.01 am (Eastern Time) on Monday.
The ban covers travellers from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
An additional seven countries -- Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela -- will face partial restrictions.
Trump said the move was prompted by a recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, during a march supporting Israeli hostages in Gaza.
He said the incident highlighted the threat posed by foreign nationals who are not properly vetted or who overstay their visas.
“We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet those who seek to enter,” he said.
Trump noted that the severity of restrictions would depend on the level of threat, and the list could change based on future developments.
“We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm,” he added.
