NARATHIWAT, May 28 (Bernama) -- A police officer was killed and five others injured in an attack by a group of armed men at the Chanae Police Station here early Wednesday morning.
Chanae Police Chief, Col Pol Wirasak Pesaena, said the incident occurred at around 8:40 am (local time) while police officers and defence volunteers were undergoing training at the entrance of the police station.
“A group of men armed with rifles, including AK-47s, opened fire on the police officers and defence volunteers.
“The shootout lasted for nearly 15 minutes before the suspects fled the scene,” he told reporters at the site on Wednesday.
Wirasak said one police officer was shot and died at the scene, while five others — police officers and defence volunteers — were injured.
“They were rushed to Prince of Songkhla University Hospital for treatment,” he said.
Wirasak added that police recovered about 30 bullet casings at the scene.
“Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack and identifying those involved,” he said.
