KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Professional mixed doubles shuttler Shevon Lai Jemie will step onto the court at the Malaysia Masters 2025 with a bold new look.
Shevon revealed that she made the huge decision to cut her long hair yesterday ahead of the Super 500 tournament at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil here from tomorrow until May 25.
“When I went to the saloon yesterday, suddenly I had this thought that I wanted to change to something new.
“I’ve had long hair for quite some time, over 10 years, I guess. Hopefully, it (new hair) will bring some new luck,” she told reporters after testing the court for the Malaysia Masters here today.
The 31-year-old admitted that defending their Malaysia Masters title is a tough task, especially with the presence of more top-ranked pairs this time.
She pointed out that world number one Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin and world number two Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping, both from China, would be strong contenders for the title.
Last year, Shevon and her husband, Goh Soon Huat, became the first Malaysians to win a World Tour event on home soil in six years after beating Indonesia's Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 21-18, 21-19.
Asked about their first-round match, Shevon said they will tread with caution as Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch are a relatively young and unpredictable pair.
“We need to be really prepared and careful because younger pairs will give their everything and have nothing to lose,” she said.
While their recent results haven’t been outstanding, Shevon said they have consistently cleared the early rounds.
Shevon added that the focus now is on stabilising their performance and gradually building back to their best form.
Of the six individual tournaments they participated in this year, Soon Huat-Shevon reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open and India Open and the quarter-finals of the other four tournaments.
