PETALING JAYA, May 13 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has received over RM1.24 million to hold the Malaysian Journalism Night 2025 and the MPI Petronas Journalism Awards 2024 on June 20.

Its president, Datuk Yong Soo Heong said RM450,000 was from Petronas for the award winners while RM799,500 were from 51 organisations, including corporations, ministries, government agencies and media outlets to organise the event, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“Thanks to the generosity of all the sponsors, we can continue to recognise and honour the best work in the world of Malaysian media. The support is a manifestation of the confidence towards journalism as a core to an informed society,” he said at an sponsor appreciation event here today, with MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail and MPI deputy president Farrah Naz Abd Karim present.

Yong, a former Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief, said Petronas’ commitment as the main sponsor since 1994 showed its continued support in recognising high quality journalism work in the country.

This year’s awards recorded the highest number of entries at 548, an increase of 60 entries compared to last year, he said, with the the highest entries being 79 for the Best Photojournalism category, followed by Best Video News with 65 entries and Best Video Interview with 46 entries from a total of 21 categories.

“A total of 58 media organisations in the country, including Sabah and Sarawak, are participating in this year’s awards, showing a rise in interest in producing high quality journalism with significant impact,” he said.

A townhall session entitled “Ruang dan Peluang Liputan Media” aimed at giving the opportunity to corporate partners, government agencies and sponsors an idea of the current media scenario was also held at today’s event.

The Malaysian Journalism Awards 2024 will be officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof on June 20 at the Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
