Fight Against Corruption Requires Collective Effort From All Parties - PM Anwar

30/06/2026 10:29 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- Efforts to combat corruption cannot be shouldered by a single institution alone, but require close cooperation between enforcement agencies, advisory bodies, Parliament, the public sector, private sector and society as a whole, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said in this context, the Special Committee on Corruption (JKMR) and the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) played an important role as checks and balances mechanisms by providing independent and critical views to strengthen the effectiveness of anti-corruption efforts.

"At Parliament today, I presented the instruments of appointment to the new members of the JKMR and LPPR after receiving the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"I conveyed my message to the newly appointed members to strengthen their resolve in advancing the anti-corruption agenda," he said in a Facebook post tonight.

He said that although they came from various backgrounds, the appointed members shared a common responsibility to strengthen efforts to combat corruption in the country.

The JKMR was established by law under Section 14 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694), with members appointed by the King from among members of the Senate and Dewan Rakyat representing both the Government and the Opposition.

Meanwhile, the LPPR was established under Section 13 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694), with members appointed by the King from among individuals with integrity who have provided excellent public service or achieved distinction in their respective professions.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said in a statement tonight that five individuals had been appointed by the King as members of the JKMR and the LPPR for a three-year term, effective June 3, 2026.

The appointments were made on the advice of the Prime Minister in accordance with Sections 13 and 14 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 [Act 694].

MACC said those appointed comprised members of the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat representing the Government and the Opposition, as well as professionals.

They are Kuala Pilah MP Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan, who was appointed chairman; Batang Lupar MP Mohd Shafizan Kepli, who was reappointed as a member of the JKMR for a second term, and also serves as deputy chairman of the board.

Also appointed were Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan as a member of the JKMR, and Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, who was reappointed as a member of the board for a second term.

Meanwhile, Enforcement, Leadership and Management University (ELMU) vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Mohd Kassim Noor Mohamed was appointed deputy chairman of the LPPR.

The statement said the instruments of appointment were presented by Anwar at the Parliament Building today, and witnessed by MACC chief commissioner Datuk Sri Abd Halim Aman, who also serves as an ex-officio member of LPPR.

MACC said the JKMR and LPPR are two of the five independent oversight bodies established under Act 694 to ensure the effectiveness, transparency and accountability of the commission.

JKMR advises the Prime Minister on various aspects of corruption issues in the country, examines the MACC Annual Report, reviews LPPR's comments on the commission's discharge of its functions under Act 694, and seeks clarification and explanations regarding the commission's annual report and the committee's review.

“Meanwhile, LPPR advises on all aspects of corruption issues, as well as MACC policies and strategies in efforts to combat corruption, and receives, examines and endorses proposals from the MACC towards the efficient and effective functioning of the commission,” the statement said.

In addition, LPPR reviews and endorses the MACC's resource requirements to ensure its effectiveness, examines the MACC Annual Report before it is submitted to JKMR, and submits its review of the commission's operations before it is presented to the board.
