SIBU, June 26 (Bernama) -- The 6.17 km Jalan Teku/Jalan Pasai Siong to Kemuyang Package I construction project here has now achieved 25.5 per cent physical progress, which is 2.82 per cent ahead of schedule, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He said the RM76 million project was being implemented according to plan with current progress exceeding the schedule target by 22.7 per cent.

"We are very satisfied with the progress of the work so far and are confident that the contractor will be able to complete the project according to schedule, although weather factors may be a challenge in the next stage," he told reporters after a visit to the project site today.

According to him, among the main components of the project is the construction of a 704-metre elevated road across a peatland area.

Uggah said the construction of the new road would open up a new development area with high potential given its location near Sibu town, in addition to improving the communication network in the area.

Obviously, the road provides a second route to Sibu town from the area.

Earlier, Uggah inspected the construction project of the new Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Selangau worth RM81 million in Selangau.

He said the project, which was scheduled for completion in June 2027, has now achieved 64.2 per cent physical progress and is ahead of the implementation schedule.

Satisfied with the progress, he is optimistic that it can be completed earlier, by the end of this year.

He said the facilities built include academic and administrative blocks, two blocks of male and female dormitories, a dining hall, 18 classrooms, 20 teacher rooms, teacher quarters and other support facilities that can accommodate about 400 students.

The project is being implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR) of Malaysia, with construction starting on July 15, 2024 and the original completion date is on June 14, 2027.
