SEREMBAN, June 16 (Bernama) -- A 20-year-old has finally obtained his identity card, confirming his status as a Malaysian citizen following assistance from villagers and the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) of Kampung Jiboi Baru, Ampangan here.
The head of Sikamat and Ampangan subdistricts, Mohd Aziz Kamaldin, said Syakawie Abdullah’s identity card application was submitted to the National Registration Department (NRD) by a concerned individual, Kamaruddin Omar, with assistance from Kampung Jiboi Baru JPKK chairman, Balkhis Abdul Wahab.
He said Syakawie has been living in a shelter behind Kamaruddin’s house in Kampung Sungai Pupoh, Ampangan, for the past four years.
“I am told that Syakawie is a person with learning disabilities. His mother abandoned him at birth, and he only has a birth certificate. He was raised by his father, a lorry driver, who died in 2022.
“Without an identity card, many processes were affected and we were unable to apply for an OKU (person with disabilities) card for him. With the card, it would be much easier for him to access aid and other entitlements,” he told Bernama here today.
Mohd Aziz said Syakawie had been placed in a welfare home but returned home to care for his father, who was suffering from a chronic disease, before he died.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail handed over the identity card at the Citra Negara programme today.
