JOHOR BAHRU, June 16 (Bernama) -- The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and Pasir Gudang Port will be consolidated under a single reporting entity known as the Port of Johor in Lloyd’s List starting this year, following official approval from the global maritime rankings publication.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the consolidation of container throughput reporting was confirmed through an official approval letter from the London-based institution to the Transport Ministry dated May 29.
He expressed confidence that the data consolidation would position the Port of Johor among the world’s Top 10 busiest ports by the end of this year.
“Previously, our country already had a port among the world’s Top 10 through Port Klang, which comprises Westports and Northport terminals.
“As for the southern region, relying on the reporting of just one port would place its ranking quite low. In fact, PTP alone has a higher throughput than Johor Port,” he said in his speech at the Dampingi Rakyat programme at Johor Port here today.
On the choice of the entity’s name, Loke explained that the rebranding as the Port of Johor is based on broader and more inclusive geographical considerations within the state.
“The PTP management must accept the fact that this consolidation will use the name Port of Johor as ‘Johor’ is broader in scope than Tanjung Pelepas, which refers to only one area. In future, it will be known in Lloyd’s List as Port of Johor, taking into account the performance of both ports,” he said.
With the official approval from Lloyd’s List, Loke said he was confident that Malaysia would create history by having two ports listed among the world’s elite group, alongside Port Klang.
He said the international recognition would not only strengthen Malaysia’s standing as a respected maritime nation, but also create higher-quality and more lucrative job opportunities, especially in Johor.
“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the Johor Port Authority and Johor Port Berhad for their continued efforts and commitment in developing the country’s logistics sector. We look forward to the official announcement from Lloyd’s List soon,” he said.
Last year, Port Klang was officially ranked among the world’s Top 10 container ports in Lloyd’s List of the World’s Top 100 Ports 2025, handling 14.64 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with PTP ranked 15th.
