KUALA TERENGGANU, June 16 (Bernama) -- A civil servant pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to 32 charges of accepting bribes amounting to RM156,336.
Manain Mat Harun, 49, who was the director of the Building Control Department at the Kemaman Municipal Council, was accused of receiving money deposited into his bank account by an individual known to have official dealings with him.
The offences were allegedly committed at a bank in Taman Chukai Utama, Kemaman, between Oct 8, 2015 and Jan 10, 2020.
He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Rabiatul Addawiah Mohd Noorlee proposed bail of RM50,000 and requested that the accused surrender his passport, refrain from interfering with prosecution witnesses and report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office once a month until the disposal of the case.
Defence counsel Mohd Shahir Mat Jusoh sought a lower bail, citing his client's willingness to cooperate and family responsibilities, including supporting his wife and school-going children.
Judge Nazlyza Mohamad Nazri allowed bail of RM36,000 with one surety, subject to the additional conditions sought by the prosecution, and fixed July 19 for case mention.
