TEHRAN, May 30 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Residents of Tehran have been gathering in central squares of the Iranian capital for nearly 90 days since the start of the conflict with the United States (US) and Israel, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
People are organising patriotic rallies in support of the government amid ongoing negotiations with Washington, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.
Dozens of families have gathered in Valiasr Square in central Tehran.
Participants in the daily protest are raising national flags and symbols of the Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah, and chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans.
Similar events are taking place at other key locations across the city.
Tents have been set up along the circular road: in some, theologians are speaking, while in others, volunteers are serving tea to attendees or drawing cartoons about the US and Israel in the context of the current confrontation.
On the façade of one building, local authorities have placed a poster depicting the face of a man resembling US President Donald Trump. The lips of the figure shown on the banner are symbolically “sealed” by the Strait of Hormuz.
“We came out to support our government and our armed forces. Yes, a ceasefire has been declared, but until the threat of war for our country completely disappears, we will remain in the squares,” said Fatima Rahmani, one of the protesters.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties. On April 7, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire.
Subsequent talks in Islamabad ended inconclusively, and the US began a blockade of Iranian ports. President Donald Trump later extended the cessation of hostilities to give Iran time to come up with a peace proposal.
