IPOH, May 15 (Bernama) -- Perak police have launched an internal investigation into the discovery of items suspected to be drugs and mobile phones in a lock-up cell at the Central Police Station of the Ipoh District Police Headquarters (IPD) last Tuesday.

State police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the investigation will determine whether there were any elements of negligence, weaknesses in control, breaches of standard operating procedures (SOPs) or involvement by any officers and personnel.

“The probe also focuses on supervision and compliance with lock-up management procedures to ensure the integrity and safety of detainees are not compromised.

“Perak police view seriously the discovery of prohibited items, including suspected drugs and mobile phones, in the lock-up following an inspection conducted by the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) of the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK),” he said in a statement today.

Noor Hisam said the inspection, conducted at about 10 pm on May 12, involved a cell housing four detainees.

“The inspection uncovered several mobile phones, as well as several packets of suspected heroin and methamphetamine.

“The police also seized several other prohibited items, including tobacco, cash and communication equipment, believed to have been brought into the lock-up without permission,” he said.

Noor Hisam said a report was lodged following the discovery, with the case now being investigated under Section 39A(1) and Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He said all items related to the case had been handed over to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department for further action, including analysis and detailed investigation.

“All department heads, district police chiefs and lock-up supervisory officers have been instructed to continuously step up inspections and monitoring to ensure full compliance with security procedures,” he added.
