JERTIH, May 3 (Bernama) -- Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has channelled RM4.5 million in zakat through its Musolla TH programme to build and upgrade selected mosques and surau, for the benefit of Muslim communities in areas in need nationwide.

TH group managing director and chief executive officer Mustakim Mohamad said that to date, two mosques and nine surau have been built under the programme across eight states, including Sabah and Sarawak.

“TH remains highly committed, as an Islamic institution, to fulfilling zakat obligations on behalf of its depositors as part of its role and responsibility in empowering the ummah through zakat distribution under fi sabilillah. This commitment is reflected through the implementation of various zakat wakalah programmes each year, including the Musolla TH initiative introduced in 2023.

“Mosques and surau are vital institutions in the development of the ummah. In addition to serving as places of worship, they can function as centres for community unity, strengthen brotherhood, and act as key platforms in enhancing Islamic outreach in the area,” he said when speaking at the opening ceremony of Surau Al-Hajj in Taman Koperat Putera, Kampung Seberang, here today.

Also present was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan.

On the Musolla TH 2025, Mustakim said RM1 million was allocated for the construction of suraus in two states, namely RM500,000 for Surau Al-Hajj in Terengganu and another RM500,000 for a new surau in Bario, Sarawak.

“Alhamdulillah, today marks the handover of Surau Al-Hajj in Taman Koperat Putera, which was built with RM500,000 in zakat wakalah assistance from TH. Insya-Allah, this new surau will benefit more than 550 congregants and local residents.

“If previously there was no surau nearby, I believe this new surau will make it easier for congregants to perform their prayers, organise religious classes and programmes, and further strengthen ties among the community,” he said.

In this regard, he said TH will remain committed to implementing more impactful zakat programmes to ensure that target groups continue to benefit from all initiatives carried out.
