PM Anwar Calls For Broader Support For Sepak Takraw As Shared Heritage, Unity Symbol

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to take a more proactive role in broadening multi-ethnic participation in sepak takraw, positioning it as both a national heritage sport and a symbol of unity.

He said sepak takraw holds a special place in Malaysian society, with deep roots in village life where generations have grown up playing the game.

Efforts to strengthen the sport, he said, should not rest solely with associations or athletes, but must be driven more broadly to reignite public interest, particularly among the younger generation.

“While it may initially have been more popular among Malay youths, just as basketball is often associated with Chinese youths, this is where the ministry must act to ensure greater participation from other communities.

“At the same time, Malay youths should also be exposed to other sports,” he said at the launch of the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Academy Complex here today.

Present were Sports and Youth Minister Dr Muhammad Taufiq Johari, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Malaysian Sepak Takraw Federation (PSM) President Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan.

Anwar said sepak takraw’s greatest strength lies in its heritage value and unique history, including references found in classical Malay texts.

“Secondly, sepak takraw has been elevated not only domestically but also internationally. This demands proper training, discipline and adequate facilities, and we have, thankfully, put these in place,” he said.

The Prime Minister also praised Hannah, a former youth and sports minister, for her commitment to advancing sepak takraw as a heritage sport despite its largely Malay fan base, describing it as a reflection of mature national leadership.

“We have created the space, and those involved must understand that this is Malaysia today. We elevate the sport while breaking down narrow racial thinking.

“We demonstrate mutual respect and prove that through sport, we can help society mature,” he said.

Anwar stressed that success should be measured by sporting excellence and national pride, regardless of ethnic background.

“When we saw sepak takraw’s success in Bangkok last year, we were all proud, even if most of the players were Malay. That is the spirit we want to project and spread.

“Without spirit, discipline and training, we cannot reach higher levels,” he said.

Last December, the national sepak takraw squad ended a 34-year drought of gold medals in the men's team event at the 2025 SEA Games when they defeated hosts Thailand 2-1.
