IPOH, April 3 (Bernama) -- A classic British-made Dennis Fire Engine, estimated to be about a century old, has become one of the main attractions for visitors to the 2026 MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah here.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department Fire Safety Division Snr Fire Supt II Md Taufik Asyarun Zainuddin shared that the engine is one of the heritage assets carefully preserved at the Fire and Rescue Department’s Mechanical Engineering Centre in Sepang, Selangor.
“It is not just a classic asset but carries high historical value as it is among the earliest fire engines used, particularly in the era before modern technology was widely adopted.
“This engine is kept at the Engineering Division in Salak Tinggi, Selangor, which is responsible for its maintenance and ensuring it remains in good condition according to established procedures,” he said when met by Bernama at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah today.
He added that the vehicle is still operational for short distances and is equipped with various basic tools that were once used in firefighting operations.
“With its tall, elongated front grille, the prominent ‘Dennis’ badge at the front, and classic round headlights, this engine stands out with its own identity.
“Also complementing its classic features is a traditional bell that was once used as an emergency signal, adding a nostalgic element for visitors,” he said.
Md Taufik said the inclusion of the Dennis Fire Engine in PMR 2026 allows visitors to understand the evolution of fire engines from the classic era to the modern age.
“In addition, visitors can not only view it up close but are also allowed to climb aboard, sit in the driver’s seat, and experience holding the steering wheel of this classic vehicle,” he said.
Apart from the classic engine, the Fire Department is also showcasing various modern fire engines and the latest equipment for firefighting and rescue operations.
These include new engines with advanced technology, motorcycle-based rapid response units, and complete rescue equipment capable of being used in various emergency situations.
He explained that PMR 2026 not only provided an interactive experience for visitors but also served to educate the public about the functions and importance of agencies and ministries.
“The public, especially visitors in Perak, should not miss the opportunity to attend and see for themselves the various assets, products, or equipment of agencies that they may not have known about or seen up close before,” he said.
