Restaurant Owner Fined RM2,000 For Killing Dog Using Fire Crackers

BATU GAJAH, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- A restaurant owner was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate's Court here today for killing a stray dog ​​using firecrackers last month.

Magistrate Azlin Zeti Zainal Abidin meted out the fine, in default two months in jail, on Wong Phan Sang, 64, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

Wong was charged with committing mischief by killing the dog ​​using a firecracker at Jalan Seroja, Taman Pusing Baru, Pusing here at about 7.30 pm last Jan 28.

The charge, under Section 428 of the Penal Code, provides a maximum jail term of three years or a fine or both upon conviction.

During mitigation, lawyer Choong Hui Yean, representing Wong, said her client only intended to scare the animal as the dog had earlier chased him, causing him to fall off his motorcycle.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Monisha Pandey.

Based on the facts of the case, a stray dog was found dead at about 7.30 pm on Jan 28, 2026, near a restaurant after residents reported hearing a loud explosion.

At about 3 pm the following day, the complainant obtained closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from a neighbour. The recording showed the accused throwing an object at the dog, causing the animal to die at the scene.

On Jan 31, 2026, at about 2.15 am, the accused handed over to the police a transparent food container containing a lighter and six multi-coloured firecrackers.
