KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) has set a target of four gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, potentially marking the nation’s best-ever achievement in the sport at the Games.
Its president, Datuk Ayub Rahmat, said the target was set based on an analysis of the athletes’ current performances, taking into account the haul of two golds and one silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“Extrapolating from that achievement, we should be targeting three golds this time. But we will try to win one more gold, which means a haul of four golds and several other medals if everything goes according to plan.
“If we achieve the target, it would be our best-ever achievement at the Commonwealth Games,” he told reporters after the 2026 Working Committee Meeting at the National Sports Council here today.
He said experienced lifters such as Mohamad Aniq Kasdan (60kg), Muhammad Aznil Bidin (65kg), Muhamad Erry Hidayat (79kg), Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali (94kg) and Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin (88kg) remain the country's best prospects for gold.
Ayub said the national squad will compete in several warm-up tournaments and undergo a three- to four-week training stint in Turkiye before heading to Glasgow.
He also said the federation has proposed that Muhammad Aznil be included in the Road to Gold programme to join Mohamad Aniq.
He expects the proposal to be decided upon at a meeting to be chaired by the Youth and Sports Minister.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held from July 23 to Aug 2.
