KOTA KINABALU, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) seized various types of goods, including taxable items, with a total value of RM169.20 million throughout January this year.

JKDM director-general Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin said the seizures were the result of enforcement operations that successfully foiled 646 cases of smuggling attempts and duty and tax evasion.

“The five main commodities contributing to the seizure value were vehicles amounting to RM65.26 million, cigarettes (RM38.68 million), other commodities (RM31.41 million), liquor (RM25.31 million), drugs (RM7.51 million) and firecrackers and fireworks (RM1.03 million),” she told reporters this after the handover ceremony of four-wheel-drive vehicles contributed by the Sabah state government at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters here today.

Anis Rizana said that throughout January this year, JKDM also recorded revenue collection of RM9.97 billion compared with the monthly projection of RM9.17 billion, an excess of RM800 million or 108.72 per cent.

She said based on current collections as well as carefully planned strategies, JKDM is optimistic of achieving the annual target of RM80 billion set by the Ministry of Finance.

She added that last year, JKDM recorded an outstanding performance in revenue collection totalling RM76.18 billion, surpassing the projection set by the Ministry of Finance.
