Mohamad Aniq Wins MASUM Sportsman Award For Two Straight Years

PUTRAJAYA,  Feb 11 (Bernama) -- National weightlifter Mohamad Aniq Kasdan was today crowned the Malaysian University Sports Council (MASM) Sportsman for 2023 and 2024.

Mohamad Aniq, of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), overcame the challenges of several other candidates to take home the challenge trophy, a winner's trophy, a blazer and RM3,000 cash.

Lawn bowler Aleena Ahmad Nawawi, also of UiTM, took home the 2023 Sportswoman award, while national track cyclist Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, of Universiti Malaya, was named the 2024 Sportswoman.

They each took home a challenge trophy, a winner's trophy, a blazer and RM3,000 cash.

Mohamad Aniq described winning the award as proof of the hard work and cooperation of all parties, saying it will spur him to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and this year's Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

"I'm delighted because this is the result of the efforts that I have put in together with my coach, the NSC (National Sports Council), MWF (Malaysian Weightlifting Federation) and UiTM, who have helped me so much,” the 2024 world championship silver medallist told reporters after the MASUM Sports Awards 2023 and 2024 ceremony here.

The awards were presented by Higher Education director-general Prof Dr Azlinda Azman and MASUM chairman Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hafiz Yusoff.

The 2023 Most Promising Male Athlete award went to judo exponent Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), while national squash player Aira Azman of UM was named the 2023 Most Promising Female Athlete.

UiTM woodball player Amsyar Sirhan Saifullah and UiTM track cyclist Anis Amira Rosdi were named the 2024 Most Promising Male and Female Athletes, respectively.

Some of the other awards were for Best Team Manager, Best Team, Best Coach and Sports Figure.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA) emerged as one of the recipients of the 2023/2024 MASUM Partner award.
