KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The launch of Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV (WEY G9) has secured over 800 bookings within its first week, reflecting strong early demand for the first locally assembled luxury new energy multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and growing confidence in intelligent hybrid mobility.

GWM Malaysia announced in a statement today that the WEY G9 represents a strategic step in positioning Malaysia as a regional production and export hub for higher-value new energy vehicles within ASEAN.

Investment, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Sim Tze Tzin said the introduction of WEY G9 is a bold step forward by GWM to make first-class mobility more accessible.

“Prioritising comfort, safety, and advanced mobility for Malaysian families, GWM’s aspirations align perfectly with our national goal of inclusive and balanced economic growth,” he said.

Sim emphasised that the value of local assembly initiatives enables the company to leverage Malaysia’s ecosystem of specialised vendors and skilled workforce, while also benefiting from free trade agreements to support regional exports.

“This initiative supports the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) by increasing economic complexity, strengthening domestic vendor participation, and enhancing technological depth through meaningful technology transfer,” he said.

Meanwhile, GWM Malaysia managing director Cui Anqi said that the company is encouraged by the strong response from its Malaysian customers.

“The bookings are more than a number; they show that customers understand what the WEY G9 stands for. This vehicle embodies our vision of intelligent luxury mobility, seamlessly combining advanced technology with genuine comfort. The early response tells us that Malaysians are ready to move into a new era of new energy mobility,” he said.

GWM Malaysia chief operating officer Roslan Abdullah said the milestone reflects not only strong customer demand, but also the capability of the country’s local assembly ecosystem.

“By leveraging skilled workforce and vendor network, we are proving that Malaysia can deliver global standards while building long-term value for the domestic industry,” he said.

Priced at RM269,800, the WEY G9, launched on January 29 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), blends hybrid performance, efficiency, safety and high-end comfort in a locally assembled package.

Powered by GWM’s Hi4 intelligent hybrid system, the model offers up to 170 kilometres of pure electric driving range and a combined range exceeding 1,000 kilometres.
