Success Of 2025 ASEAN-Malaysia Chairmanship Gained World Attention - Mohamad

SERDANG, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s success in organising the ASEAN–Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, including bringing together world leaders for a series of high-level summits, has attracted global attention, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He said that beyond strong logistical execution, Malaysia recorded notable achievements throughout its tenure as ASEAN Chair, despite navigating an increasingly uncertain global geopolitical landscape.

“We successfully assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 despite various challenges arising from global geopolitical uncertainties.

“We brought together world leaders and organised key platforms such as the ASEAN–GCC and ASEAN–GCC–China meetings, in addition to successfully hosting the 46th ASEAN Summit and, subsequently, the 47th Summit. These achievements have received worldwide attention,” he said.

Mohamad was speaking at the ASEAN–Malaysia Chairmanship 2025 appreciation ceremony here today, which was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

He added that Malaysia continues to enjoy strong trust within ASEAN, as reflected by its selection as the permanent shepherd for the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, a role it will undertake for the next 20 years.

“This reflects ASEAN’s confidence in Malaysia. Even when two close neighbours, Thailand and Cambodia, faced a border dispute, they turned to Malaysia to help resolve the issue.

“This is a source of pride for us as the host, coordinator and facilitator during our ASEAN Chairmanship,” he said.

Mohamad expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in ensuring the success of the ASEAN–Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, including both the public and private sectors.

“We were able to manage the arrival and participation of leaders from around the world, not just a small number, but many at the highest level,” he said.

In October last year, Malaysia officially handed over the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines, symbolically marking the transition of leadership as Malaysia entered the final phase of its 2025 chairmanship.

Since taking over the chair from Laos, Malaysia has focused on strengthening unity, inclusiveness and sustainability within the region.

Two major milestones underscored the success of its chairmanship: the admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member state and the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.

Since ASEAN’s establishment in 1967, this marked the fifth time Malaysia has assumed the chairmanship, following previous tenures in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.
