PUTRAJAYA, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- The Gig Workers Act 2025 (Act 872) was gazetted today after receiving Royal Assent on Dec 16, according to the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA).
In a statement today, KESUMA said Act 872 will only come into force on a date to be approved by the authorised minister and clearly specified through a finalised gazette.
“Accordingly, all provisions under this Act cannot yet be enforced until the effective date is officially announced. Any further announcements regarding the Act’s effective date will be communicated from time to time through KESUMA’s official channels,” the ministry said.
The gazetting of Act 872 is an important step in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s labour legal framework, particularly in regulating the rapidly growing gig employment ecosystem and in providing a more comprehensive and systematic protection framework for gig workers in Malaysia.
According to KESUMA, it will continue implementation preparations, including the development of subsidiary legislation, the alignment of governance mechanisms, as well as engagement sessions with stakeholders to ensure the orderly and effective implementation of Act 872 in line with the realities and needs of the gig employment ecosystem.
On Sept 9, the Dewan Negara passed the Gig Workers Bill 2025, marking a new milestone in protecting more than 1.2 million gig workers in Malaysia and bringing to an end the era of the absence of legal protection for the group.
