KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- Lawyer and National Bahasa Melayu Icon Lim San Shien made history when he was appointed as the president of the 2025 National Statistics Debate during the National Statistics Debate Finals.

Lim’s appointment was made by the Chief Statistician of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, in recognition of his commitment and extensive experience in promoting the Malay language through impactful programmes, scholarly writing, and frequent appearances as a forum panellist and speaker at government events.

In a statement today, Lim, who is also the Johor Unity Ambassador, expressed his gratitude to Mohd Uzir and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) for the trust and confidence placed in him to preside over the finals of the National Statistics Debate.

“My appointment as president of this National Statistics Debate provides a valuable experience, as I presided over a British Parliamentary-style debate rather than the usual Asian Parliamentary format commonly used in debates,” he said.

“This platform allows me to continue growing in knowledge, exposure, and to further strengthen my credibility, paving the way for future appointments as president in other debate competitions,” Lim said.

The 4th series of the 2025 Inter-Universities Statistics Debate, organised by DOSM in collaboration with the Malaysian Universities Debate Council (MADUM), took place at the Jelai Multipurpose Hall, Sungai Koyan, Pahang.

The competition saw Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia, Universiti Malaya and Universiti Malaysia Sabah advancing to the finals.
