JASIN, Dec 29 (Bernama) -- Merlimau Polytechnic (PMM) in Melaka made history by ranking 199th out of 1,745 universities worldwide in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2025.
Its director, Norizam Sekak, said UI GreenMetric is a global ranking system that evaluates higher education institutions based on campus sustainability.
The assessment covers infrastructure and environment, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation, as well as education and research.
“This achievement strengthens PMM as the most sustainable Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution in Malaysia and proves that polytechnics can compete internationally in the sustainable development agenda,” he said in a statement today.
Norizam said the polytechnic’s improved performance since first joining the ranking in 2018 was driven by the SmartGreen PMM initiative, which is based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Key factors include a campus Energy Management System, energy-saving initiatives of up to 20 percent, and the Energy Performance Contract (EPC) project that supports more efficient and sustainable energy use, he added.
He said the institution has implemented several high-impact green projects such as rainwater harvesting systems, the development of a campus lake as a biodiversity ecosystem, energy-efficient housing, and integrated campus waste management, while data-based management and systematic reporting have also increased international credibility.
“This achievement directly benefits students by exposing them to real sustainability practices, which improves the employability of TVET graduates.
“For staff, the green campus creates a more comfortable working environment and supports professional development. For the local community, PMM serves as a reference centre for sustainable practices through community engagement programmes and strategic partnerships,” Norizam added.
Norizam said the achievement shows the polytechnic’s continuous efforts to promote sustainability in line with national goals and the SDGs, adding that PMM will strengthen this agenda through the SmartGreen PolyCC Blueprint 2025–2030, with a target of entering the Top 100 worldwide in the UI GreenMetric ranking.
He also said that PMM is currently ranked 11th out of 91 higher education institutions in Malaysia and remains number one among 51 Polytechnic and Community College (PolyCC) institutions.
