LOS ANGELES, Dec 22 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Disney and 20th Century's Avatar: Fire and Ash dominated the North American box office in its opening weekend with an estimated three-day total of US$88 million, Xinhua reported, citing Sunday's data from measurement firm Comscore.
The epic science fiction film also earned US$257 million at the international box office for a global debut weekend of US$345 million.
The film is the sequel to 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water and the third installment in James Cameron's Avatar franchise, which has earned over US$5.6 billion worldwide to date.
Avatar: Fire and Ash holds a 68 per cent approval rating based on 264 reviews on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It also received an "A" grade from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore, which uses a standard scale from A+ to F.
Another newcomer, Angel Studios' animated musical David, came in second with US$22 million this weekend.
Debuting in the third spot, Lionsgate's thriller film The Housemaid took in US$19 million.
