KUALA TERENGGANU, July 11 (Bernama) -- A tahlil and doa selamat ceremony for the victims of a bus crash involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students was held last night, as part of the Terengganu MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR).

Held after Maghrib prayers at Surau Dato' Amar, Pasar Kedai Payang here, the event was attended by the public, including staff from the Works Ministry and students from local maahad tahfiz schools.

The spiritual programme aligns with the Malaysia MADANI principles that emphasise not only physical development but also human-centred ideals.

Works Ministry deputy secretary-general (Management) Datuk Zainal Alhakab Seman said the Terengganu PMR takes a different approach, tailored to suit the local community.

"One of the key highlights of this edition of PMR is the tahlil ceremony and the Terengganu Bermunajat programme. On Friday evening (today), the nasyid group Rabbani will hold a special performance titled 'Tautan Hati Ganu Bersama Rabbani'," he said.

"Tonight's tahlil ceremony is meant for us to honour and pray for our departed brothers and sisters, including UPSI students involved in the recent tragedy in Gerik," he told Bernama last night.

In the early morning incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when a chartered bus from Jertih to return to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, was involved in an accident at the East-West Highway in Gerik.

The accident left 33 other individuals injured, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of a multi-purpose vehicle.

The Terengganu PMR, which features various activities and services, runs until tomorrow and is expected to draw around 25,000 visitors.

Themed "Pembangunan MADANI, Rakyat Sejahtera", the programme is organised by the Prime Minister's Office through the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit, in strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Works and the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department.
