Tatneft Ready For Potential Collaboration With Petronas

From Nurunnasihah Ahmad Rashid

ALMETYEVSK (Russia), May 14 (Bernama) -- Tatneft, a top-five largest oil company in Russia, is open to explore potential collaboration in petrochemicals, refining and sustainable energy initiatives with Petronas.

Describing the national oil company as a reputable global company with strong capabilities especially in offshore, Tatneft general director and chairman of the management board (chief executive officer) Nail Ulfatovich Maganov said Tatneft's expertise largely focused on onshore operations.

However, there are still significant opportunities for cooperation with Malaysia in downstream and sustainability-related segments.

"Petronas is a world-renowned company with a high technological background and a great reputation.

"Both sides could potentially collaborate in areas related to oil refining, petrochemical complexes, mature oil fields as well as green and circular economy initiatives, amid growing interest in cross-border industrial cooperation within the energy sector.

“We are ready to explore collaboration involving low-carbon development, sustainable technologies and circular economy initiatives, as these are common global challenges that can unite energy producers internationally," Maganov told Bernama during a visit to the company's biotech operation at Almetyevsk on Wednesday, which was held in conjunction with the 17th International Economic Forum “Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum 2026” held in Kazan.

Maganov pointed out that energy producers globally share similar operational challenges and sustainability priorities, particularly in balancing conventional energy development with the transition towards greener and more recyclable economic models.

He also revealed that Tatneft was already involved in a project located near a Petronas-linked operation in Central Asia, signalling existing familiarity between both sides within the broader regional energy landscape.

“Beyond the energy sector, Malaysia remained an attractive partner for future cooperation, given the country’s industrial development and strategic positioning within the ASEAN region,” he said.

Almetyevsk, a city known to be a major Russian oil hub and the headquarters of Tatneft, is located more than three hours drive from Kazan, capital of Tatarstan, where the KazanForum was being held.

The media engagement was organised under the Strategic Vision Group “Russia-Islamic World”.

Tatneft has operations spanning oil and gas production, refining, petrochemicals, tyre manufacturing, energy solutions, biotechnology as well as related industrial technologies.

According to information provided in its website, Tatneft’s total oil reserves amounted to 10.5 billion tonnes in 2025, providing sufficient resources to maintain current production levels for more than two centuries.
