FIDO Alliance: Global Passkey Usage Reaches Five Billion
KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- FIDO Alliance announced global passkey usage has reached an estimated five billion, reflecting accelerating adoption of passwordless sign-in technologies ahead of Authenticate APAC 2026 in Singapore on June 2 and 3.
In a statement, the alliance said findings from its State of Passkeys 2026 report showed strong awareness and deployment momentum in Singapore across both consumers and enterprises, based on research involving 1,000 consumers and 100 enterprise decision-makers.
FIDO Alliance Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Shikiar said Singapore’s strong digital infrastructure positions it to further expand adoption of phishing-resistant authentication technologies.
According to the report, 80 per cent of consumers in Singapore are aware of passkeys, while 65 per cent have enabled passkeys on at least one account and 38 per cent use them regularly when available.
Among enterprises, 65 per cent of organisations in Singapore have deployed or are actively deploying passkeys for employee sign-ins, while 30 per cent said they had achieved fully passwordless workforce authentication.
The report said password-based authentication continues to pose security and operational risks despite rising passkey adoption.
About 14 per cent of consumers in Singapore experienced account compromise or breach notifications in the past year, although this remained below the global average of 33 per cent and the Asia-Pacific average of 41 per cent.
The study also found that 25 per cent of Singapore consumers are likely to abandon a purchase or sign-in attempt if they cannot remember their passwords, compared with 47 per cent globally and 51 per cent across the Asia-Pacific region.
The alliance said organisations deploying passkeys reported benefits including improved security confidence, reduced password reset requests, faster employee logins and fewer phishing-related incidents.
Authenticate APAC 2026 is expected to bring together industry stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities surrounding the transition from passwords to passkeys and phishing-resistant authentication systems.
