AirBorneo Maintains Fares Despite Rising Fuel Costs, Focuses On Connectivity
KUCHING, March 16 (Bernama) -- AirBorneo's current airfares remain unchanged despite rising global fuel prices as the airline continues to prioritise affordable connectivity for communities in Sarawak and Sabah, said its chief executive officer Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin.
He said although operational costs have risen slightly due to higher fuel prices, the airline has not introduced any fare adjustments at this stage.
“There is a slight increase in our expenses, particularly fuel costs, but for now the fares remain the same.
"Our plan for Phase 2 is still ongoing. Whatever it is, we are still targeting our launch date (for regional flights this July),” he said when met by reporters at AirBorneo iftar with the media here today.
Megat Ardian Wira said the airline’s operations are driven not only by commercial considerations but also by a strong social mission, particularly in providing air services to rural communities under the Rural Air Services (RAS) network.
“Our mission is about connectivity. It is a social agenda and also part of our commitment under our agreement with the federal government,” he said, adding that any fuel surcharges or fare adjustments would require consultation with relevant stakeholders.
He explained that AirBorneo is closely monitoring global fuel and energy prices, while implementing strategies such as fuel procurement and operational planning to mitigate potential cost increases.
“At this point in time, we are not increasing any fare price. Any future adjustments would have to be discussed with the stakeholders,” he said.
The CEO also highlighted the airline’s operational achievements since the MASwings Sdn Bhd takeover, noting that AirBorneo has carried nearly 100,000 passengers over the past two-and-a-half months, maintaining strong on-time performance and passenger satisfaction.
“Connectivity remains our priority. Whether for rural communities or regional travel, we aim to provide reliable and affordable services for all,” he said.
