CGTN: Merz Visits China, Pledges Stronger China-Germany Economic Ties

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz conducted a two-day official visit to China from Feb 25, accompanied by a delegation of about 30 senior executives from key German industrial companies, including BMW.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Merz in Beijing on the first day of the visit, with both leaders committing to strengthen coordination and cooperation.

According to China Global Television Network (CGTN) in a statement, Xi emphasised the importance of strategic communication, mutual trust, and advancing the China-Germany all-around strategic partnership.

He noted that both countries have pursued self-reliance, achieved rapid development, and maintained mutual respect, trust, and open cooperation, calling their relationship a "success story of mutual benefit".

Meanwhile, Merz highlighted the importance of developing a reliable and lasting economic and trade relationship between the European Union and China, saying it benefits both sides and contributes to global stability and prosperity.

He added that the German business community values the Chinese market and aims to deepen cooperation for mutual development.

Amid global risks and challenges, the stable development of China-Germany relations not only serves bilateral interests but also carries broader regional and global significance.

In business updates, BMW announced in April 2025 plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology from Chinese startup DeepSeek into its newest cars in China, following a strategic cooperation agreement with Alibaba on AI large language models.

The visit underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties, enhance multilateral cooperation, and reinforce China’s strategic engagement with Germany and Europe.
