MITTA, MOTAC Step Up Efforts To Curb Illegal Tourism Operators

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Indian Tour and Travel Association (MITTA) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) are stepping up efforts to curb illegal and unlicensed tourism operators amid a rise in such activities.

MITTA president Datuk Aruldas Arulandu said illegal travel businesses have grown significantly in the post-pandemic period.

“We have seen a tremendous increase in illegal travel operations after COVID-19, and this has become a serious concern for the industry,” he said during the #LegalTourism – Safer Travel Awareness Forum here today.

Aruldas said MITTA represents and safeguards its members’ interests but has limited authority to act against illegal operators, as enforcement powers rest with the relevant authorities. As such, collaboration with MOTAC is essential.

He said MITTA has engaged MOTAC’s enforcement division to highlight the issue, including holding discussions with ministry officials earlier this year and submitting documentation on suspected illegal tourism activities promoted through social media platforms.

“One of our committee members compiled evidence, including online advertisements and social media promotions, and submitted it to the ministry for action,” said Aruldas, adding that the ministry has since taken steps, including blacklisting several unlicensed operators from hotels.

“We hope the collaboration with MOTAC will continue to strengthen enforcement efforts,” he said.

Aruldas also urged consumers to exercise caution and ensure they deal only with licensed travel agents to protect themselves from potential losses and scams.

The forum, organised by MITTA in collaboration with MOTAC, aims to raise public awareness on legal and responsible tourism practices, particularly the importance of engaging licensed operators, while guiding regulatory compliance and consumer protection.
