Penang To Focus On Value Creation Economy, Growth Industries For NCER Under 13MP - Chow

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) direction for the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) for Penang will focus on an economy based on value creation, high-value growth industries and balanced regional expansion.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that for the regional industrial ecosystem network in the semiconductor sector, Penang remains the leader and is supported by the existing network in Kulim, Kedah, Ipoh and the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) which is currently under planning.

"The upgrading of Penang Port, the expansion of Penang International Airport, the construction of the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the upgrading of the Juru-Sungai Dua Expressway will continuously improve the connectivity and competitiveness of Penang and the NCER, including as a catalyst for regional development, especially archaeology-based tourism.

“Under Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) of the 13MP, two new projects involving talent development to realise investment and economic growth in strategic sectors and the development of the supply chain ecosystem have been planned," he said in a post on Facebook today.

He said several extension projects including the NCER Technology and Innovation Centre (NTIC) and the development of Penang Durian Valley@Relau would continue.

Chow added that the NCER achievements under the 12MP for Penang showed very good progress. In terms of gross domestic product (GDP) value, he said Penang's achievements amounted to RM121.49 billion with 45 per cent contribution to the NCER while investments realised was RM152.5 billion with 47 per cent.
