MATRADE To Strengthen Malaysia’s Presence In China Via MIHAS@Shanghai
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) will strengthen Malaysia's presence in the Chinese market through the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS)@Shanghai from Nov 5-10, 2025.
In a statement today, MATRADE said the event, organised in conjunction with the China International Import Expo (CIIE), will feature 250 Malaysian companies across food and beverage, agricultural products, fast-moving consumer goods, medical equipment and healthcare and financial services sectors.
MATRADE chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the selection of Shanghai as the location for the showcase is strategic and timely.
“The global halal economy is expanding rapidly. It extends beyond halal food and beverages to encompass halal logistics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal care.
"This comprehensive market is projected to grow from US$3.5 trillion to over US$5 trillion by 2030, underscoring immense global potential," he said.
The opportunity is significant for Malaysian halal producers whose reputation for quality and compliance with international standards aligns with the growing demand for trusted, premium products in China, he said.
MATRADE chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz said following MIHAS@Dubai 2024’s success, which generated RM2.2 billion in sales, this second international edition at Shanghai’s National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) aims to achieve RM2.5 billion in total trade.
“We are confident to surpass last year’s target, driven by our dedicated International sourcing programme, which facilitates targeted business matching sessions with 100 buyers, including 20 premium buyers from China, alongside participants from India, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Brazil and other markets,” he said.
According to MATRADE, China was Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years in 2024, with bilateral trade reaching RM484.25 billion, or 16.8 per cent of Malaysia’s global trade.
Malaysia-China trade rose by 8.6 per cent to RM385.71 billion for the first nine months of 2025, or 17.3 per cent of Malaysia’s total trade.
Specifically in the halal sector, Malaysia’s 2024 halal exports rose by 15 per cent to RM61.79 billion against 2023. China accounted for RM6.25 billion of these exports and is Malaysia’s second-largest halal export market.
MIHAS@Shanghai supports the 13th Malaysia Plan target to achieve RM80 billion halal exports, an 11 per cent contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), in line with the Halal Industry Master Plan 2030.
