From Harizah Hanim Mohamed

BUSAN, Aug 27  (Bernama) -- Malaysia and New Zealand will explore investment and cooperation opportunities in the fields of energy transition and climate change.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, said Malaysia and New Zealand have agreed to explore cooperation in the energy sector, particularly geothermal energy.

Fadillah met his counterpart, New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change and Minister for Energy, Simon Watts, today. They discussed bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and New Zealand.

Fadillah is currently on an official working visit here until Aug 29, in conjunction with the 15th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Ministers Meeting (EMM).

In addition, Fadillah also held meetings with Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Siow Huang. Discussions with Singapore focused on strengthening the ASEAN Power Grid with the expansion of connectivity networks in the ASEAN region.

APEC EMM15 is a ministerial-level meeting under the APEC framework and a continuation of the previous session held in Lima, Peru, last year. Among the main agendas of the meeting are discussions on policies and initiatives in the energy sector, as well as efforts to promote cooperation and investment among APEC economies.

South Korea is hosting this edition, with the theme of “Accelerating Sustainable, Affordable, Reliable, Secure and Innovative Energy for a Prosperous Future.”

The outcomes of the meeting will be finalised through a Joint Ministerial Statement (JMS) of the APEC Energy Ministers.
