KLIA Achieves Global Standards In Departure Efficiency Through Airspace Enhancements -- CAAM
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has achieved global standards in departure efficiency, marking a major milestone in Malaysia’s air traffic management capabilities following the implementation of key airspace enhancements, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).
CAAM said it successfully conducted Simultaneous Independent Parallel Departure Operations (SIPDO) on KLIA’s triple Runway System, marking a new benchmark in operational excellence.
The operation allows aircraft to depart simultaneously and independently from KLIA’s three parallel runways, enabling three take-offs at the same time without sequencing delays.
“The procedure is designed with strict separation standards and advanced air traffic management systems, ensuring the highest levels of safety while reducing delays, optimising traffic flow and significantly increasing departure capacity,” it said in a statement today.
The aviation authority said the initiative builds on an earlier achievement, the Simultaneous Independent Parallel Approach (SIPA) Operations Based on Flight Direction, introduced in October 2024.
It said both enhancements streamline aircraft arrival and departure routes within the Kuala Lumpur Terminal Manoeuvring Area (TMA), a critical hub for Malaysian and regional airspace operations.
Based on airspace performance data collected in May 2025, KLIA recorded a departure route efficiency of 86.54 per cent, slightly exceeding the global benchmark of 86.34 per cent. Despite a 15 per cent increase in air traffic volume since October 2024, the airport also achieved a 1.34 per cent improvement in arrival route efficiency.
CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud said these advancements demonstrate CAAM's commitment to innovation, safety, and efficiency in the management of Malaysian airspace.
"By adopting international best practices and harnessing advanced procedures such as this initiative, Malaysia is positioning itself as a leader in regional air traffic management,” he said.
CAAM said it will continue to work closely with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and airlines to ensure that improvements in the skies are matched by efficiency gains on the ground.
The authority added that the initiative will continue to be closely monitored, with plans to expand the improvements across Malaysia’s national airspace system to support growing aviation demand, strengthen industry confidence and reinforce the country’s position as a regional aviation hub.
