ABB Unveils Advanced Circuit Breaker To Boost Power Resilience, Strengthen Cybersecurity

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- ABB has unveiled the next generation of its flagship air circuit breaker, the SACE Emax 3, aimed at supporting facilities with high power demands such as data centres, advanced manufacturing plants, hospitals and airports.

The Emax 3, successor to the Emax 2 smart circuit breaker, introduces enhanced features to address growing concerns over grid stability, cybersecurity, and the rising energy consumption driven by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in data centres.

Equipped with advanced power sensors and real-time analytics, the Emax 3 monitors power usage, system health and environmental factors including temperature, according to a statement.

The collected data is accessible remotely or via the device’s touchscreen, providing users with live system insights, alerts and predictive maintenance recommendations.

“Critical infrastructure needs resilient electrical systems. As demand for advanced electrification continues to grow, Emax 3 enables customers to adapt to changing power needs and protect uptime,” said ABB Electrification Smart Power President, Massimiliano Cifalitti.

Meanwhile, ABB Electrification Head of Distribution & Energy Management, Lara Cortinovis said that grid instability, human error and cyber threats are key concerns among customers, with power outages now posing million-dollar risks to operations.

ABB’S SACE-brand circuit breakers are trusted globally for their performance, with millions installed in critical facilities worldwide.

Significantly, Emax 3 is the world’s first air circuit breaker certified with Security Level 2 IEC 62443 cybersecurity standards. It is also the first to feature a fully integrated arc flash detection system, enhancing safety and system reliability.

According to Uptime Intelligence’s 2025 Outages Analysis, more than half of digital infrastructure disruptions are caused by power failures, with over 50 per cent of major incidents incurring losses exceeding US$100,000. One in five data centre operators reported their latest major outage cost over US$1 million. (US$1=RM4.18)
