MIMOS To Support Uzbekistan In Developing Its Semiconductor Sector
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Mimos Bhd, an innovation centre under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), has signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Economy and Finance and Uzeltexsanoat (UzETS).
UzETS is Uzbekistan’s state-run association responsible for the development and global integration of the country’s electrotechnical and electronics industries.
In a statement today, MIMOS said that under the agreement, it will support Uzbekistan in developing capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing, talent development, technology transfer, and product commercialisation.
The agency said the MoU was signed on June 13 during the International Investment Forum in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
“This MoU aims to elevate Uzbekistan’s electrical and electronics (E&E) sector and position the country as a key player in the region and the global semiconductor supply chain within a decade,” it said.
MIMOS said the collaboration brings strategic value to Malaysia’s technology sector and economy by gaining access to a new, untapped market in Central Asia through the export of technical know-how, intellectual property, and training services.
“Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and industry players within the semiconductor value chain will be well-positioned to capitalise on demand for high-value services and products as Uzbekistan builds its technological infrastructure,” it added.
MIMOS acting president and group chief executive officer Dr Saat Shukri Embong said the partnership allows the agency to share its expertise and facilities to help Uzbekistan grow its semiconductor industry, while reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a global leader in the sector.
“Our mission is to help build a self-sustaining E&E ecosystem here, from talent to technology to market access, so that Uzbekistan can emerge as a regional leader in the semiconductor domain,” he said.
Uzbekistan Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Jamshid Kuchkarov, who was present at the MoU briefing, said MIMOS’ assessment and engagement provides a strategic launch pad for the country’s E&E ambitions, helping Uzbekistan to avoid starting from scratch.
A special-purpose vehicle will also be formed under the initiative, with plans for it to transition into a commercial joint venture to lead Uzbekistan’s national E&E master plan.
