PTP Scores Third Consecutive Month Of Record Throughput With 1.27 Million TEUs In May

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 5 (Bernama) – Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) set another operational milestone in May by handling 1.27 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), marking the third consecutive month of new throughput highs.

This followed 1.18 million TEUs in March and 1.22 million TEUs in April, further cementing PTP’s position as one of Asia’s leading transhipment hubs.

PTP is a joint venture between Malaysia’s MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals.

“This latest milestone surpasses our April record by 53,000 TEUs. What a remarkable leap. With this momentum, we anticipate a robust year ahead,” PTP chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said in a statement.

He said the ability to manage such high volumes smoothly demonstrates the port’s commitment to delivering exceptional service to customers and partners while contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth.

PTP Chief Executive Officer Mark Hardiman said the latest milestone reflected not only the port’s capacity to exceed performance benchmarks but also the strength of partnerships with key customers.

“This milestone goes beyond a display of our ability to push limits; it reflects the strong and promising collaboration we have with every single one of our truly valued customers at this leading transhipment hub, including the newly established Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd,” he added.

The Gemini Cooperation is a strategic partnership between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd to create a shared vessel network for East-West trade lanes.

Hardiman said PTP serves as the key Asian hub within the Gemini Cooperation, playing a pivotal role in supporting the success of the global alliance.

“At PTP, we are committed to maintaining consistently high productivity, even as volumes grow and demands intensify, such as those from the Gemini Cooperation network. This stability adds significant value for our customers, and ensuring schedule reliability remains at the heart of our service commitment,” he added.

Hardiman highlighted that PTP’s long-term growth is backed by strategic investments in asset upgrades and infrastructure enhancements.

“Our journey has not been without challenges, but these very challenges have shaped our resilience and determination. This year, as we proudly celebrate our 25th anniversary, these record-breaking milestones serve as a powerful reminder of how far we have come, and how much further we can go together,” he continued.
