First World Gas Conference In China To Spotlight Energy Future
KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- The 29th World Gas Conference (WGC2025) will take place from May 19 to 23 at the National Convention Center in Beijing, marking the first time the flagship event is hosted in China since its inception in 1931, underscoring China’s rising influence in global energy dialogue.
According to the WGC2025 National Organizing Committee in a statement, the conference, themed “Energising a Sustainable Future”, will explore the evolving role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in supporting global energy security and facilitating a low-carbon transition.
Organised by the International Gas Union (IGU), whose president, Li Yalan stated that natural gas, the world’s third-largest energy source, is critical to balancing safety, affordability, and sustainability during the transition to a low-carbon future.
In her welcome address, Li said WGC2025 would offer a multi-layered, global platform for sharing energy governance insights, presenting a world-class 'feast of ideas' shaped by leading thinkers and practitioners in the energy space.
The event is expected to gather more than 3,000 participants, including global energy leaders, policymakers, and technical experts, with representatives from over 70 countries and regions, senior executives from top energy firms such as CNPC, ExxonMobil, Shell, and BP, as well as international organisations and financial institutions.
WGC2025’s arrival in China coincides with the conclusion of the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan, offering an opportunity to align domestic energy goals with international collaboration.
According to WGC2025 National Organizing Committee Chairman, Cao Yujun the conference provides a platform for global stakeholders to better understand the strength and vitality of China’s gas industry.
“This global gathering will serve as a bridge between China and the international energy community, offering both a 'China solution' and 'global wisdom' for building a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system,” he said.
Cao noted that the event would not only highlight Chinese firms’ achievements but also serve as a call for local players to venture into global markets and for foreign investors to tap into China's economic opportunities.
More than 300 companies are expected to exhibit at the 50,000-square-metre venue, including industry giants Petronas, QatarEnergy, TotalEnergies, Sinopec, CNOOC, PipeChina and China Huadian Corporation. High-end engineering, manufacturing and consultancy firms will also take part.
Through over 80 sessions—including keynote speeches, roundtable discussions, and technical forums—WGC2025 will cover a wide range of topics such as methane emissions control, hydrogen development, renewable gases, digital transformation, and the LNG market outlook.
