EBC, Oxford Discuss Balancing Economic Growth, Climate Resilience

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- EBC Financial Group (EBC), in partnership with the Oxford Department of Economics, hosted a pivotal session in the “What Economists Really Do?” (WERD) series amid the growing challenges of climate change and economic instability.

The event brought together leading minds from academia and finance to explore actionable strategies for aligning economic systems with environmental sustainability while addressing pressing societal concerns.

Titled “Macroeconomics and Climate”, the event featured a keynote lecture by Associate Professor Andrea Chiavari, and a panel discussion titled “Sustaining Sustainability: Balancing Economic Growth and Climate Resilience”, moderated by Associate Professor Banu Demir Pakel.

Panellists, including experts from Oxford and EBC, offered practical insights on aligning financial systems with climate goals, according to a statement.

Chiavari’s keynote focused on the economic impacts of climate change, stressing the importance of carbon taxation as a way to incentivise sustainable practices.

The panel further explored the role of global collaboration, financial opportunities in climate action, and the need for government policies to align market incentives with sustainability goals.

In addition to discussing carbon taxation, the panel emphasised the importance of reshaping public narratives about climate action and redirecting fossil fuel subsidies to clean energy.

Meanwhile, EBC Financial Group (UK) Ltd Chief Executive Officer, David Barrett highlighted the role of financial institutions in driving sustainability, emphasising the need for clear regulatory frameworks and long-term strategies.

The event underscored the critical role of policy, business innovation, and individual responsibility in creating a sustainable economic future, with a strong focus on collaboration across sectors to ensure meaningful climate action.
