Northport Achieves New Breakbulk Record With 52,480 FWTs of Steel Cargo

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, a member of the MMC Group, has set a new record for breakbulk cargo handling from a single vessel, surpassing its previous milestone set in March this year.

In a statement, the port said it handled 52,480 freight weight tonnes (FWTs) of steel cargo from the conventional cargo vessel MV African Blackbird.

The operation took place from Sept 14 - 17, 2024, over nine working shifts.

The previous record was set with the handling of 48,853 FWTs from MV Jin Chao.

“Our commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and investment in state-of-the-art facilities has enabled us to push the boundaries of cargo handling,” said chief executive officer Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof.

Between January and August 2024, Northport handled a total of 8,174,028 FWTs of conventional cargo, marking a growth of 15.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Steel cargo remains a key contributor to Northport’s conventional cargo performance, driven by rising demand for competitively priced steel products.

In August, the company broke its monthly record for conventional cargo, handling 1,145,021 FWTs, surpassing the previous record of 1,143,318 FWTs set just a month earlier.

This included the safe handling of two new aerotrains for Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which were discharged at Northport on Aug 28, 2024.

“Northport’s strong performance so far positions the company to end 2024 on a high, potentially making it one of the best-performing years for its conventional cargo segment,” the port said.
