From Soraya Jamal

BALI, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- AirAsia is planning to expand its network in Indonesia, particularly in East Nusa Tenggara, the southernmost province of the country, according to Capital A Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

"We recently launched flights to Labuan Bajo, which have been highly successful. Now, we want to do more in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and offer direct flights to eastern Indonesia from ASEAN, along with some domestic routes.

"We’ll be announcing more details next month," Fernandes said at the Bali International Airshow 2024 here today.

He added that AirAsia is also exploring potential routes to Papua and Dili (Timor Leste).

"I have spoken to Pak Luhut (Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan) about reopening Belitung. We’re also considering Semarang, Pontianak and Palembang.

"As soon as we get the necessary approvals, we’ll move forward," Fernandes noted.

As of June 2024, Indonesia AirAsia operated 33 routes, including 8 domestic and 25 international routes, carrying 1.7 million passengers.
