19/06/2026 12:45 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim spent time meeting Malaysians in Ashgabat in conjunction with an official visit to Turkmenistan.

The Prime Minister said the opportunity was used to share the MADANI Government's commitment to continue to strengthen and foster relations with Malaysians abroad.

He urged the diaspora group to stay connected with the homeland and to keep abreast with the nation's development.

"Alhamdulillah, we were able to meet the Malaysian diaspora in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Although far from our beloved homeland, their spirit and warmth of closeness felt like we were gathered in Kuala Lumpur.

"These are unofficial ambassadors of the country who are consciously creating the country's good reputation and image, expand networks and advance the country's dignity forward," he said in a post on Facebook today.

Anwar said he also explained that the purpose of the visit to Ashgabat encompassed more than the aspects of trade, investment and economic cooperation.

The Prime Minister said the visit was an effort to expand friendship between the countries, strengthen understanding and open up new areas of cooperation that could benefit both parties.

Anwar is currently on a two-day official visit to Turkmenistan, his first official visit to the Central Asian country at the invitation of Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov following Berdimuhamedov's official visit to Malaysia in December 2024.
