SEPANG, June 15 (Bernama) -- The Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) that connects Shah Alam and its surrounding areas in Selangor is expected to begin operations at the end of this month, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said.

The specific date will be announced in the next two weeks, he said, adding that the project was in its final trial operations.

"After various tests and trial operations are finalised, we are confident that operations can start,” he told the media after chairing the Malaysian Road Safety Council’s 62nd annual general meeting here today.

Also, the draft bill to set up the Malaysian Transport Safety Board (MTSB) will not be tabled at the upcoming parliament session that begins next week, he added.

"The MTSB has obtained Cabinet approval, but now we are discussing with the Public Service Department about job positions and such,” he said, adding that his ministry has already identified individuals who will be appointed to join the board and that it will be finalised soon.

In other developments, Loke said his ministry will hold discussions with e-hailing operators on the possibility of implementing additional security measures to protect the safety of their drivers, including installation of dashcams, but will need to take into consideration passenger privacy concerns.

“In terms of security measures, we will discuss with e-hailing operations on the steps that can be taken to protect drivers… both parties are equally important - passengers are important, and so is the safety of drivers.

“So we have to take the balance,” he added.
