KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants ties between Malaysian public higher education institutions (IPTA) and Japanese universities to be strengthened, particularly in exploring advanced research fields such as quantum technology.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Prime Minister raised the matter during the Cabinet meeting today following his official visit to Japan, which concluded yesterday.

“This (quantum technology) is a very important field, including efforts to adopt quantum cryptology and quantum encryption,” he said at his weekly press conference here today.

Fahmi, who is also the Unity Government spokesman, said such academic collaboration is crucial to enable local institutions to master future technologies capable of driving the nation's digitalisation agenda.

In this regard, Fahmi said the Prime Minister also wants existing strategic linkages, including cooperation between Keio University and Universiti Malaya, to be elevated.

He said the Prime Minister also urged more local universities to take proactive steps to forge closer cooperation with leading Japanese universities in various strategic fields.

He said the move is in line with the outcomes of the Prime Minister’s discussions with investors in Japan, which covered sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, digital technology, critical minerals and resilient supply chains.
